Summer Lighthouse Getaways

02/06/2025

Steeped in maritime history, lighthouses serve as beacons of both beauty and purpose. These iconic landmarks not only provide practical aid, navigating mariners away from danger, but also form a visually striking element of our dramatic coastline. Trinity House has a long-standing relationship with these structures. In 1566, the Corporation was granted the role of managing and regulating lighthouses and by 1836, it also had the authority to charge lighthouse owners and manage their lights. Today, Trinity House acts as the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar, managing a total of 68 lighthouses.

Lighthouses naturally exist against the most picturesque of backdrops and many now serve as the most exciting and scenic of getaway options. As the season for Summer holidays approaches, read on for our selection of lighthouse escapes suggestions, which are sure to make for a magnificent break.

St Anthony Lighthouse – St Mawes, Cornwall

St Anthony Lighthouse was constructed by Trinity House in 1835 in Falmouth Harbour. You may recognise it from the 1980s children’s television series Fraggle Rock, where it formed the blueprint for the Fraggle Rock Lighthouse in the opening sequence of the show. Perched on the rugged edge of the Roseland Peninsula, Sally Port Cottage which is attached to the lighthouse, offers a truly off-the-beaten-path escape. Reached by a 300-metre descent from the clifftop above, it promises a tranquil coastal retreat.

Cromer Lighthouse – Cromer, Norfolk

Cromer Lighthouse was established by Trinity House in 1833 and you can now stay at Valonia Cottage located at the lighthouse. Just a short walk along the shoreline brings you to the lively town of Cromer, where charming independent shops, quaint pubs and fresh local seafood await, including the famous must-try crab sandwich. Cromer boasts a wide stretch of sandy beach and the town’s historic pier should definitely be a pit stop, where you can even try your hand at crabbing, with buckets and nets available to hire on the pier.

Book here

Whitby Lighthouse – Whitby, North Yorkshire

Trinity House built Whitby Lighthouse in 1856 and you can now escape here and stay at one of the cottages situated at the lighthouse. Captain Cook is famously associated with Whitby as it was where he learned his seamen’s trade in the 17th century. Cook spent 10 years exploring the, back then, unchartered territories of the South Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific Oceans. It was in Whitby that Cook shadowed a ship-owner and embarked on his endeavours with a ship built here. Whitby also boasts a beautiful stretch of sandy coastline and with the North York Moor National Park a stone’s throw away, you’re guaranteed boundless trails – a walker’s paradise.

The Point Lynas Lighthouse – Anglesey, Wales

In 1835, the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board built The Point Lynas Lighthouse and in 1973, Trinity House took over responsibility for this structure. This lighthouse is unusual in that it doesn’t follow the typical tower structure that we normally see but instead, sits uncharacteristically low to the ground. Situated on the north-eastern tip of Anglesey, you will have spectacular views of the Irish Sea, and with the whole of Anglesey at your fingertips, there’s much to explore including breathtaking waterfalls (Pistyll Rhaeadr, Ceunant Mawr or Aber Falls), Beaumaris Castle and fascinating pre-historic landmarks such as the Bryn Celli Ddu burial mound.

Having opened its doors in the Autumn of 2024, this all-day brasserie and bar is the modern counterpart to Maison Fran'ois - the upmarket bistro based in Mayfair. Local Highlight: Bar Douro

12/02/2025

For our local highlight for this issue, we are spotlighting Portuguese restaurant Bar Douro, which is located in a railway arch in one of London’s most iconic food and drink destinations: Flat Iron Square. Their menu of authentic Portuguese small plates and wine has impressed food critics across the board, which is no surprise given their attention to quality and specialist produce. Bar Douro champions locally-sourced ingredients from the UK with any specialist products being sourced directly from artisanal producers in Portugal.

Alongside high calibre produce, Bar Douro’s repertoire of Portuguese wine beats any other, stocking the largest collection in the UK. They explore Portugal’s regional wine and indigenous grape varieties made with traditional techniques and their careful curation resulted in the award for ‘London’s Best Iberian Wine List’ by 2019 Wine List Confidential.

The interiors remain faithful to Bar Douro’s roots with the azulejos-tiled dining room adding to the authenticity of the experience; and the open kitchen allows you to see the chefs at work whilst they craft a delicious spread. London Walks

06/11/2024

London has much to offer in the way of walking opportunities and now made even more picturesque with the changing seasons. Think colourful, crunchy leaves and crisp, fresh air. The city moves at an incredible pace, but we suggest slowing down and enjoying an adventurous stroll, whilst discovering new corners of our metropolis. So, grab your walking boots, bundle up in a cosy coat and head on out on one of our suggested walks around the capital.

Hampstead Heath
Pay Hampstead Heath a visit with 800 acres of wild woodland and sprawling meadows in North London’s Zone Two. You can spend much of the day here doing a circular route around this gem of a park. Take a dip in the ponds (if you’re feeling brave!) and summit the top of Parliament Hill for one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the London skyline. With Highgate Cemetery a 12-minute walk away, you can tail end your day with a stroll around this historic site.

The Thames Path
The Thames Path is a National Trail which follows the River Thames from one of its sources in the Cotswolds, ending at the Thames Barrier in Woolwich, London. Although we’re not suggesting you do the entire 184-mile route, we do recommend tackling a section of it for a spot of sight-seeing. Embark on the Putney to Tower Bridge option, which will take you through 16km of the city’s historical sites, passing through Battersea Park, along the South Bank, close to the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye as well as various theatres and galleries. If you opt for the north route, you’ll be taken through Hurlingham Park, Chelsea, Westminster and Embankment, ending at the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

Sydenham Hill Wood, Cox’s Walk
If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse yourself in a woodland wander, opt for Cox’s Walk in Sydenham Hill Wood. You will truly feel a world away from London. Full of wildlife and history, this is one of the last remaining sections of the Great North Wood, and houses 200 species of trees, plants and wildlife, ranging from bats to owls as well as rare fungi, insects and woodland mammals. Arrive at Sydenham Overground and make your way over to oak-filled Cox’s Walk to begin a journey of peace and tranquillity through the ancient trees. After your time here, stroll over to the Horniman Museum and take a gander at its anthropological displays and beautiful gardens, along with its stunning views of the city.

Local highlight – Bermondsey Antique Market

21/07/2024

Bermondsey Antique Market, also known as the New Caledonian Market, serves as a true testament to London's rich history. It was originally established as the Metropolitan Cattle Market in 1855 and was opened by Prince Albert near King’s Cross. Over time, it transformed into the Caledonian Market, which became a vibrant hub for second-hand goods.

World War II temporarily halted its operations, but in 1947, it found a new home in Bermondsey Square. The market evolved, specialising in antiques by 1960, and soon became a cornerstone of South London's cultural scene. Known for its early morning starts and bustling atmosphere, it is open on Fridays between 6am and 2pm and attracts locals as well as international buyers.

The market blends vintage collectables and traditional antiques. Its unique character, storied past, and community spirit ensure that Bermondsey Antique Market remains a beloved London institution. Find out more on the website: bermondseyantiquemarket.co.uk.

Local Business Spotlight: The Ginger Pig

01/03/2024

The story of Borough-based institution ’The Ginger Pig’ is a fascinating one. Prior to The Ginger Pig’s inception, founder Tim Wilson bought three Tamworth pigs – Milly, Molly and Mandy – after he became interested in traditional butchery and the farming of rare and native breeds of animals. While prime cuts were all the rage at the time, Tim realised that this left over a large quantity of high-quality meat which needed to be put to use. What started out as a practice in sustainability evolved into what The Ginger Pig is now nationally renowned for – the art of sausage making.

The shop in Borough Market is the London home of The Ginger Pig. Tim was asked to join the relaunch of the now world-famous market in the 1990s, and the rest is history. As well as a full offering of high-quality raw produce such as pork, poultry, beef, lamb and sausages, you can buy pork pies, scotch eggs and The Ginger Pig’s famous hot sausage rolls. The team also offer classes to any would-be butchers, in the art of preparing a whole host of meats and dishes, such as beef, lamb, sausage making, game, beef wellington and steak.

Go Dinosaur Spotting at Crystal Palace Park

This London park was once the grounds of the famous Crystal Palace, which burned down in the 1930s. Now, the grounds are inhabited by Victorian dinosaur sculptures that, despite being hilariously anatomically incorrect, make for a fun family day out in the spring sunshine. Other top reasons to visit the park include a dizzying maze, the ruins of the old Crystal Palace aquarium, and the Capel Manor Urban Farm, filled with meerkats, pigs, horses and other farmyard favourites.

There are guided tours and spooky nights to entice visitors to experience the Cemetery, where over 170,000 people lay in rest.

Local Business Spotlight: Southwark Brewing Company

05/08/2022

Southwark Brewing Company was founded in 2014 by Peter Jackson and lifelong friend Andy Nichol. Peter had worked in the brewing industry since leaving university in 1981, spending his time in sales and marketing, but never brewing a single pint. Enter master brewer Sean Franklin, a friend of over 25 years, former owner of the award-winning Roosters Brewery in Harrogate, and pioneer of Hoppy Pale Ales.

Using a complete home brew kit in his garage, Peter learnt the art of brewing to complement his theoretical knowledge. Over eight years, the Southwark Brewing Company has seen a lot of change and development. They now have over 100 different modern beers, all brewed traditionally, with many more planned. The brewery now has six fermenting vessels, up from the three original ones, including a 20 Barrel FV, commissioned in February 2020 in advance of a big sales drive.

Beer

Looking for a drink after work or a moment of relaxation at the weekend? The Southwark Brewing Company has a Tap Room that offers a range of beers on draught and in bottles. If you don’t fancy an ale, they have other drinks available, such as cider, wine, soft drinks, and a limited range of spirits and mixers. Dogs and well-behaved children are welcome, as well as customers who bring their own food (Maltby Street Market is just around the corner).

Buying independent gifts will have you giving twice

05/04/2022

When you buy from an independent store, you support an entrepreneur who had a dream and decided to take a risk. You support the underdog, who chose to act on their desire to offer something different to the local community. You are not just encouraging the sense of community spirit when you buy local or independent, but you are helping build it—supporting small businesses to blossom and local talent being employed. It is estimated that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business, an estimated 63p stays in the economy compared to the 40p that would remain in local circulation from more significant companies.

Shopping independently is also your opportunity to come across some new, undiscovered brands which are not necessarily available at your typical high street retailer. Independents also tend to be very reactive to the needs of their customers. Experiences are often much more tailored and thoughtful when choosing local and independent because the brands need to stand out and leave a good impression. Independents are often even better for the environment. Local businesses themselves, by nature, tend to make more local purchases, supporting local producers wherever they can. Local purchases mean less transportation and less CO2 emissions. Independent retailers often stock locally-made products, which isn't usually the case for big retailers.

In the spirit of gifting thoughtful, local, and independent, we have comprised a list of local independents worth a visit.

The London Flower Shop

One of your local florists is located right in the heart of Long Lane, Southwark and has been the home to the London Flower Shop for over 20 years. The florist has been family-owned for over 12 proud years. They pride themselves on establishing great relationships with the community, international customers, and many businesses, offering fresh flowers and indoor and outdoor plants for any occasion.

The London Flower Shop provides high-quality flowers and plants to local customers, hotels, pubs, weddings, and various corporate events. Their floristry skills can meet diverse customer needs, from small intimate first dates to large wedding installations. Pop along for all your bouquet needs, big or small.

Mon Bijoux

The second independent business on the list is Moni Joux. The jewellery shop was opened over 10 years ago by married couple and ex-financial service workers, Jason and Jamie. Following a one-year trip worldwide to find inspiration for their next venture, they were introduced to their vision while stumbling across silver in Mexico.

Jamie and Jason's vision is simple: bring the highest quality, modern and elegant, ethically-sourced handcrafted silver jewellery to London and beyond. They attribute their success to their customers and always give the personal touch that keeps customers coming back. Mon Bijoux's handmade jewellery is made from the highest-quality and most popular alloy in the jewellery sector: 925 Sterling silver. It is all nickel-free, hypoallergenic, and wearable for allergy sufferers.

Mon Bijoux takes pride in their business, and their ethics are the centre of their company ethos. The store uses recycled packaging, transports by foot, cycle or electric vehicle, and ensures no exploitation of artisans or employees. Mon Bijoux's jewellery can also be personalised with any inscription they hand engrave in-store in any font or customised handwriting.

Trinity Village London bucket list 2022 – Part 1

11/02/2022

As the first glimmers of spring start to appear, it seems only right we start to look ahead to what 2022 will bring. In the full spirit of getting the most out of this year following lockdowns and the seemingly never-ending pandemic, we have prepared a London bucket list with a bit of everything to suit all. Below is part one of our suggestions, and we're sure you'll find a couple of things to add to your bucket list.

Carlton Tavern

In 2021, the pub reopened, ready to serve the local community fine ales and great food for hopefully the next 100 years. The pub comes equipped with a dining room and beer garden to enjoy a pint and a bag of crisps, a three-course meal, and everything in between.

 www.carltontavern.co.uk

Captains ahoy!

If you like combining the outdoors with a little bit of luxury, grab your captain's hat and head to the River Thames. Skuna offers a luxury hot tub experience on a boat, whilst embracing your inner Nordic by piloting their completely bespoke electric, easy to self-drive, wood-fired hot tubs.

Hot tub boats originate from Scandinavia's famous tradition of the 'Nordic Bath'. The experience is all-weather year-round, the water is changed between each booking, and each boat can fit up to seven people on board. They also have BBQ boats if you prefer to stay dry whilst floating down the river.

Press the champagne button at Bob Bob Ricard

Bob Bob Ricard in Soho is the iconic London restaurant, famous for pouring more champagne than any restaurant in Britain. The restaurant serves a classic British and Russian menu in a glamorous all-booth dining room setting. Each table is equipped with a "Press for Champagne" button and, once pressed, will summon an attendant to top-up your bubbles supply.

Hang out with some city wildlife

Over the past 50 years, seeing parakeets flying overhead has become ever more common, and the birds in question are ring-necked parakeets. If you are looking for something a little more unusual to do, there is an opportunity to get to know the exciting wildlife in one of London's famous parks. All you have to do is put some seed or fruit in your hand whilst standing in St James or Kensington Gardens; before you know it, parakeets will land for a snack.

Kensington Gardens in West London is most famed for this. Just head to Lancaster Gate tube station, cross the busy road to enter at the top of Hyde Park and follow the path down along the west side until you see the Peter Pan statue.

Mayfield Lavender Fields

If you're up for a trek to the outskirts of London and you like flowers, Mayfield Lavender Fields is a lovely day out. The twenty-five-acre lavender farm with a café and shop is located in Banstead – approximately 15 miles from Central London. The farm is a popular visitor attraction throughout the summer, where you can wander through a sea of beautiful organic lavender.

The lavender starts typically to bloom towards the middle to end of June, and the peak time is July and August. Photography is encouraged at the farm, so it's a perfect stop to add a purple palette to your Instagram, and they even run a competition every year.

Walk on a glass bridge thirty metres above ground

Arguably one of the more 'touristy' items on this bucket list, but nevertheless one worth doing, is experiencing the spectacular glass Floor in the high-level walkway of Tower Bridge.

The glass tower bridge is a permanent feature that offers visitors an incredible birds-eye view of London life. The bridge is forty-two metres above the River Thames and thirty-three metres above road level. The glass walkway provides the perfect vantage point to spy the skyline and the hustle and bustle of London life beneath your feet.

Business Spotlight: Emilia Ltd. / Bianca & Mora, Borough Market

29/10/2021

Emilia sells only the most exquisite authentic Italian food and wines with one central goal: to bring to Britain the same high quality, authentic Italian charcuterie, cheese, parmesan, and balsamic vinegar Italians have on their tables. Based in Borough Market, Emilia’s ‘Bianca & Mora’ stall offers genuine Italian regional food.

Since the beginning, Emilia has been proud to support small family businesses and producers from their home region, Emilia Romagna. Emilia Romagna is one of the most well-known Italian regions, with its capital city, Bologna. Located at the centre of the peninsula, a long stretch of Emilia Romagna’s eastern coast lies along the Adriatic Sea, making it an appealing summer destination. The food in Emilia Romagna is still proudly prepared in the way it has traditionally been made. It is from these traditional and family secrets, that the food offered at the Borough Market stall takes its inspiration.

Shop

The Emilia Romagna region is still considered one of the main food regions in the world for its unique produce, territory, growing methods and traditions. With a quick browse of the Bianca & Mora store products, you’ll instantly recognise some of the most famous Italian products, including Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Parma Ham, Balsamic Vinegar Modena and Piadina bread.

All products are sourced from a collection of small farms in Northern Italy. The star of the charcuterie is the hand-carved leg of the Mora Romagnolo pig, which spends its life feeding on acorns and chestnuts, lending the meat a subtle but distinctive flavour. All the products are organic, and several enjoy Italian DOP status, short for Denominazione di Origine Protetta, which translates as “Protected Designation of Origin”. DOP products are locally-grown and packaged; they get their regulated certification by following strict guidelines from production to packaging. Whether you’re planning to indulge in some homemade pizza or treat yourself to the number one comfort food, cheesy pasta, you are sure to have an authentic Italian food experience.

The Best Locations for Lighthouse Staycations – Summer 2021

23/08/2021

As restrictions on foreign travel have scuppered many people’s plans to travel abroad, some have opted to stay closer to home. And there are some unusual places to choose from.

The Corporation of Trinity House built and still maintains over 60 lighthouses across the UK; many of which offer overnight accommodation. In light of this, we have collated some of the best lighthouse stays across the UK. Steeped in history and offering panoramic views of the sea, a lighthouse staycation offers a unique holiday experience.

1. Nash Point, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales

Historically, the sands on the Welsh coastline were a major hazard for ships, contributing to the loss of many lives. After the wrecking of a passenger vessel, Frolic, in 1831, the Nash Point Lighthouse was built. The penultimate lighthouse in the UK to be de-manned, it now sleeps up to four and is located along a beautiful 14-mile-long stretch of coast. This historic lighthouse is perfectly placed for a family that enjoys long walks. With the Gower Peninsula also within easy reach, Nash Point provides plenty of special experiences to be enjoyed on your staycation.

Giddy Grocer

04/03/2021

Founded in 2017 by TV producer-come-grocer Christine Hall, and fellow Bermondsey local Simon Lyons, Giddy Grocer is a distinctive grocery store on Bermondsey Street with a traditional approach to its interior and customer service, yet a 21st-century outlook on sustainable and ethically sourced produce. With fresh fruit, veg, cheeses and other delicious essentials hand-picked from artisan British producers, the Giddy Grocer team always aims to champion newcomers they believe are worth supporting.

Hall, who spent much of her career producing award-winning documentaries such as Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares, has a rich family history of providing London locals with fresh produce; her grandparents owned a greengrocer in the New Forest in the 1950s – a place renowned for growing quality soft fruits and vegetables – where her father became resident baker.

Having traded in Bermondsey for over 12 years, Simon has a high profile in the local area – his B Street Deli is a neighbourhood favourite, and his passion for serving the local community with high quality, delicious food is well recognised.

Both Christine and Simon are long-term Bermondsey residents, and felt that there had long been a need for a great place to buy fresh groceries and provisions – so when an opportunity to own a shop on Bermondsey Street arose, Giddy Grocer was born.

Over the course of the pandemic, Giddy Grocer has remained open, serving the community with essential items. The shop offers click and collect and delivery services too, so you can sample the delicious delicacies without leaving the house.
