BorrowMyDoggy is a trusted community connecting dog owners with local dog lovers who are happy to help with walks, sitting and holiday care. Its offices are here, at 6 - 8 Cole Street.
Explains Rikke Rosenlund, Founder: “When owners lend their dog to a trusted dog borrower, the benefits are multiple: the dog gets more love and exercise, the borrower gets companionship, and the owner gets the peace of mind that while they are busy, their dog is having fun. We call it a woof-woof (win-win) situation for everyone involved.”
Officially launched at the end of 2012, with all matches done manually, the online matching platform launched in 2013 and by 2014 the community had over 100,000 members and they’d even launched a mobile app! They now have over 400,000 members, with thousands more joining every week.
Members of the community include everything from squirrel-chasing Spaniels and sock-stealing Labradors to tug-of-war crazy Pugs and water-mad Westies. But on top of that, BorrowMyDoggy also has some human celebrity members including Leona Lewis, Rita Ora, James from The Vamps and cricketer Steven Finn!
The company currently employs 16 people, split into three teams: Marketing (or as they like to call it, Barketing), Product, and Operations. Barketing take the lead on everything from social media and content to PR and partnerships, while the job of the Operations team is to ensure all members are happy and their questions answered. The Product team make sure that everything from the website to the app runs smoothly; continuously developing the site based on the community’s feedback.
With offices so close to Borough Market, the staff find themselves there for absolutely everything—lunch, snacks, coffee and, of course, delicious cakes and treats for the BorrowMyDoggy team!
“The BorrowMyDoggy idea was born on a beautiful summer’s day when I took care of a neighbour's Labrador, Aston. Instead of spending the day stuck indoors, Aston enjoyed an afternoon at the park, attended a garden party, and met some new friends. I soon realised that lots of dog owners could use a helping hand looking after their dog from time to time and there are thousands of dog lovers who, just like me, would love to take care of a dog—free—simply because they love dogs,” says Rikke.
“I come from a family of entrepreneurs, so new business ideas have always interested me. I have previously done a lot of charity work and enjoy making a difference to people’s lives, so starting my own company with this value at its core felt like the perfect next step.
“When we first launched the BorrowMyDoggy website, 70 people signed up over three days. The stories of why people had decided to join really touched me—there was everything from the retiree who had recently had an operation, to the family with a young girl begging for a dog. We love leaving ‘paw prints of happiness’ on the lives of dogs and people and we have so many wonderful stories…the best part of my day is always when I read these—you can’t help but smile.”
